Reinventing the Ornament is a bas-relief work that reinterprets plant motifs from three heritage buildings in Saint-Hyacinthe, which were converted into digital models and then 3D-printed. The motifs were produced using a PLA composite incorporating recycled eggshells, developed in collaboration with the ÉTS University’s Laboratory for Smart and Circular Manufacturing (LFIC), with eggshell content ranging from 10% to 30%. The variations and irregularities produced by this experimental material were preserved as a visible part of the work, rather than corrected. Installed in the Espace Aiglon Indigo at the Daniel A. Séguin Garden, the work thus creates a dialogue between heritage, technology, and material transformation, and the principles of a more resilient garden adapted to current ecological realities. The work can be understood both as a reflection on the fragility of a horticultural aesthetic based on control and as the emergence of a new beauty or as a contemporary aesthetic that is more organic, imperfect, and adapted to current ecological realities.
